CHANGES TO CANADIAN IMMIGRATION LAW-LATEST UPDATES 2024

This year Canadian newcomers can experience several changes in laws and regulations that are implemented on both the provincial and the territory level. The changes starting from employment and taxes for international students' Tuition will definitely impact on international students, temporary foreign workers, and permanent workers in Canada. Well, this blog will give you an idea about the changes that will help you to make decisions for federal regulation which are expected in 2024 for the newcomers.

TAX RULES AFFECTING CANADA:-

                                                              The Canada Revenue Agency is changing many tax rules this year, which will definitely impact permanent residents.

 

TAX FREE SAVING ACCOUNT:-

                                                        The CRA increased the annual contribution limit for TFSAs by $500 to $6,500 to $7,000 per year. This is important for the residents in Canada, including Permanent residents as it allows the account holder who contributes money into the account to avoid getting tax on capital gains and withdrawals. 

REGISTERED RETIREMENT SAVING PLAN:-

                                                                              The annual percentage of income that RRSP holders can deposit into their account is 18% in 2024, The CRA increased the contribution from 30,780$ in 2023 to 31,560$ in 2024. This will be beneficial for the PR savings for the long term future.

                             

CANADA PENSION PLAN AND EMPLOYMENT INSURANCE:

                                                                                                         The Canadian employees or workers have CPP or EI which is deducted from their paycheques. In 2024, employees in Canada will now have to pay $3,867 towards the CPP 2024, a year-over-year increase of $113 for those earning at least $68,500 annually. This means, in the short term that employed persons across Canada will take home slightly less money every month. A second CPP tax, also set to begin this year, was recently announced by the federal government.

NEW FINANCIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS:

                                                                                                                                           For all international students with study permit applications received/submitted as of January 1, the federal government has now more than doubled the cost-of-living financial requirement that applicants must display during the application process. In other words, Canadian study permit applicants must now display that they have $20,635 in savings – a significant increase from the $10,000 that international study permit applicants had to display before the start of this year.

 

NEW CHANGES AT THE PROVINCIAL LEVEL:

                                                                                     Broken down by province, the following will outline changes coming to laws and regulations around Canada that are expected to have a significant impact on newcomers in this country.

 

Ontario

Minimum Wage Increase: Currently set at $16.55 per hour, the province is expected to increase its minimum wage rate on October 1.

 

Quebec

Out-of-Province Tuition Hike: Beginning this Fall, out-of-province English-speaking students looking to study in undergraduate or professional graduate programs at Quebec’s three English-language institutions – Bishop’s, McGill, and Concordia – will see their tuition increase by around $3000. 

 

Stricter Language Criteria: 

                                                 As of November 23, the Government of Quebec will require temporary foreign workers and international students* applying through the Quebec Experience Program (PEQ) to reach new French-language proficiency levels – specifically, at least seven for speaking and five for writing. Additionally, the PEQ will now require temporary foreign workers to pass a French test to renew their work permits.

 

Prince Edward Island

Minimum Wage Increase: 

                                                     Currently set at $15 per hour, the province will increase its minimum wage rate to $15.40 on April 1 and then to $16 per hour on October 1.

 

Nova Scotia

Minimum Wage Increase:

                                                      Currently set at $15 per hour, the province will increase its minimum wage rate with inflation on April 1. Nova Scotia’s government has also indicated a plan to further increase the provincial minimum wage by an additional one percent annually.

 

Nunavut

Minimum Wage Increase:

                                                     Previously set at $16 per hour, Nunavut has increased its minimum wage rate to $19 per hour effective January 1.

But now what? What to do after arriving in Canada? Where to go? If you have many questions and confusion don’t worry here are some tips for Canadian citizenship, which will help you to guide and solve your every doubt for the same. So what are you waiting let’s see and let’s learn about the thing to do after arriving the Canada.

 

Things to do in your first two weeks

1.     Apply for your Special Insurance Number:-

It is needed to work in Canada and for access to government services and benefits. Also, if someone asks you for SIN ask them why they need it. As an employer, you play a leading role in protecting your employees’ personal information and preventing SIN fraud. Your employee's SIN is confidential and should only be used for income-related information.

                                                                             

2.     Apply for government health insurance:-

Through your province or territory’s health ministry as soon as you arrive in Canada. Depending on where you live, it may take 3 months to get coverage. Canada provides coverage for approximately 70% of Canada’s healthcare needs, and the remaining 305 is paid through the private sector. The 30% typically relates to services not covered or only partially covered by Medicare like eye care and dentistry. While waiting for the government to approve your health insurance, it is good to get private medical insurance so you are covered for any medical needs. Make sure you understand what is covered as some medical services are not covered.   

                                                 

3.     Get your permanent resident card:-

Provide your Canadian address to Immigration, refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) within 180 Days. Your permanent resident card will arrive at your home in the mail. Through his card you can work anywhere, you can access universal healthcare and social services, sponsor your family member to travel and even live in Canada, get access to free education for your children, can transfer to Canadian citizenship once you meet the requirements, you can get access to more expensive rights and freedoms in Canada than temporary residents.

 

4.      Open a bank account:-

As soon as you arrive in Canada get a bank account as many specific services are provided for newcomers. There are 2 main types of bank accounts you can use: Savings account and Chequing Account. The bank will provide you a debit card to access your account at the bank and at an ATM. Canada has many different banks where you can visit or search online to explore the different services that they offer to their customers.

                                         

5.     If you have an emergency, call 911:-

This is the national emergency telephone number that connects to local police, firefighters, and ambulances. Some places in rural or isolated areas may use a different number. Make sure to verify the local emergency number where you live.

1.     Find an accommodation:-

There are different types of housing in Canada. Housing costs in Canada are high, especially in large cities, and it can be challenging for you to find affordable rental apartments or housing that meet your needs. So find affordable and suitable accommodation.

 

2.     Register your children in school:-

The school year starts in late August or early September, and finishes in June. Children attend school from Monday to Friday, and also schools are closed on public holidays. The registration process can take several weeks. It is best to enroll your child as soon as possible. Also during registration, you need to show several legal documents:

-         Your child’s age (such as a passport)

-         Your legal relationship (as parent or guardian)

-         Where you live with your child (home address)

-         Record of immunizations to show that your child's vaccines are up to date

You can ask for transportation options for your child to school during the registration process.

 

3.     Explore your community:-

Go to your local library or search online to learn about new neighborhood and public transportation options. Visit the local community, markets, and restaurants and make new friends who will help you to get familiar with the city or area you live in. Also in the starting stage, it might be difficult for the students to survive but nothing to worry about. WHAT TO DO AFTER ARRIVING UK?

 

          

     

Þ     Þ     Well, here starts a challenging journey after reaching another country! Some people found it more difficult to start their journey but now nothing to worry about. Here are some tips to do after landing in another country... So, let’s have a look at it.

 1.     Find a suitable accommodation: -

After landing, the most important thing you should do is search for suitable accommodation close to your university so that it will be convenient for you to travel. While most students prefer to live in university accommodation itself, and if you are choosing to stay in university accommodation, make sure that you confirm your accommodation on the university campus. The accommodation in the university is usually single occupancy, so you don’t have to share your room with anyone else. Well, if you don’t find university accommodation, then arrange private accommodation in townhouses which is suitable for international students.

1.     Complete your registration at the university: -

The next step is to confirm enrollment in the preferred university. All students must complete the enrollment procedure at the beginning of the academic year. Once you complete the enrollment, you can access your academic course, timetable, and many other information from the university.

1.     Get your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP): -

 BRP or Biometric Residence Permit is used to confirm your identity and right to study and access public services. It will be best if you collect your BRP after arriving in the country. BRP confirms your immigration permission to study.

1.     Register with a doctor: -

Getting registered with a single practitioner is beneficial. Most universities have medical centers that allow students to access medical services immediately. International students have to pay the health surcharge along with their visa application, which allows them to use the national health service in the case of a medical emergency. Having medical insurance after moving to any country is an advantage here.

Having a SIM card is as important as anything mentioned above. It helps you to connect with your friends and family in your home country and allows you to build new contacts. Whether you are looking for a job or need help in emergencies, a local phone number helps you to reach out to your friends and employers, making it convenient for you to connect with them. Research the local network providers and choose the one that best suits you.

1.     Look for part-time job opportunities:-

With a valid student visa, you will be allowed to work part-time as per immigration guidelines. It allows you to work 20 hours per week while studying and full-time during semester breaks or holidays. Finding a part-time job will help you to support your expenses while studying and also get you good work experience, which is a bonus point for your career. Thus, you should get a flexible job that allows you to work while you study to fund your living costs.

The University of Sheffield developed from three local institutions: the Sheffield School of Medicine, Firth College, and the Sheffield Technical School. The School of Medicine, founded in 1828, was by far the oldest. Its early history was very insecure and it was saved from collapse by the opening of Firth College, which took over the teaching of all basic science subjects to medical students.

Firth College was one of a group of university colleges founded in the late 19th century. It developed out of the Cambridge University Extension Movement, a scheme designed to bring university teaching to the large towns and cities of England, most of which lacked any university provision. The success of these courses in Sheffield led Mark Firth, a local steel manufacturer, to establish the College in 1879 as a center for teaching Arts and Science subjects.
