WHAT TO DO AFTER ARRIVING UK?

 

          

     

Þ     Þ     Well, here starts a challenging journey after reaching another country! Some people found it more difficult to start their journey but now nothing to worry about. Here are some tips to do after landing in another country... So, let’s have a look at it.

 1.     Find a suitable accommodation: -

After landing, the most important thing you should do is search for suitable accommodation close to your university so that it will be convenient for you to travel. While most students prefer to live in university accommodation itself, and if you are choosing to stay in university accommodation, make sure that you confirm your accommodation on the university campus. The accommodation in the university is usually single occupancy, so you don’t have to share your room with anyone else. Well, if you don’t find university accommodation, then arrange private accommodation in townhouses which is suitable for international students.

1.     Complete your registration at the university: -

The next step is to confirm enrollment in the preferred university. All students must complete the enrollment procedure at the beginning of the academic year. Once you complete the enrollment, you can access your academic course, timetable, and many other information from the university.

1.     Get your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP): -

 BRP or Biometric Residence Permit is used to confirm your identity and right to study and access public services. It will be best if you collect your BRP after arriving in the country. BRP confirms your immigration permission to study.

1.     Register with a doctor: -

Getting registered with a single practitioner is beneficial. Most universities have medical centers that allow students to access medical services immediately. International students have to pay the health surcharge along with their visa application, which allows them to use the national health service in the case of a medical emergency. Having medical insurance after moving to any country is an advantage here.

1.     Get a sim card:-

Having a SIM card is as important as anything mentioned above. It helps you to connect with your friends and family in your home country and allows you to build new contacts. Whether you are looking for a job or need help in emergencies, a local phone number helps you to reach out to your friends and employers, making it convenient for you to connect with them. Research the local network providers and choose the one that best suits you.

1.     Look for part-time job opportunities:-

With a valid student visa, you will be allowed to work part-time as per immigration guidelines. It allows you to work 20 hours per week while studying and full-time during semester breaks or holidays. Finding a part-time job will help you to support your expenses while studying and also get you good work experience, which is a bonus point for your career. Thus, you should get a flexible job that allows you to work while you study to fund your living costs.

1.     Explore the country:-

While studying, you can take an opportunity to discover the city you are living in and its culture. The initial days after moving can be stressful and lonely, as you might not get constant support from your family and friends. While studying, make new friends and that will help you to overcome the homesickness during those initial days and indulge in activities that make you happy. Traveling is the best way to understand the transportation system and to learn about the culture.

The University of Sheffield developed from three local institutions: the Sheffield School of Medicine, Firth College, and the Sheffield Technical School. The School of Medicine, founded in 1828, was by far the oldest. Its early history was very insecure and it was saved from collapse by the opening of Firth College, which took over the teaching of all basic science subjects to medical students.

Firth College was one of a group of university colleges founded in the late 19th century. It developed out of the Cambridge University Extension Movement, a scheme designed to bring university teaching to the large towns and cities of England, most of which lacked any university provision. The success of these courses in Sheffield led Mark Firth, a local steel manufacturer, to establish the College in 1879 as a center for teaching Arts and Science subjects.

The university ranked 105th in the world and 13th in the UK in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024. also among the top 50 most international universities in the world, according to data from the 2023 Times Higher Education World University Rankings. Western Bank Library offers learning spaces designed to inspire your best work and houses extensive research collections. The Grade II listed building is also home to our Special Collections and National Fairground and Circus Archive.

Flexible services:-

Order a book online and when you're finished with it, you can drop it off at any of the five sites and we'll get it back to where it belongs. We'll automatically renew any unreturned books, provided no one else has requested them.

Food and drink:-

Certain corners of Sheffield are defined by the food and drink they offer. Whether you're into street food or pub grub, you’ll find something to satisfy your tastebuds. Take yourself to London Road for a culinary tour around the world. Sample Greek, Turkish, Chinese, Malaysian, Japanese, Mexican, and more all within a five-minute walk. Head to Kelham Island for a local beer. Sheffield is full of creative energy. Art, theatre, and history gems can be found on pretty much every street corner. Museums Sheffield offers three great venues in the city centre, which celebrate home-grown talent and bring outstanding international experiences to Sheffield. There's the spectacular Millennium Gallery for art, crafts, and history. The Graves Gallery's breathtaking collection of visual art spans centuries and continents.  And next to the University, there's Weston Park Museum, where you can explore natural history, art, and events from the city’s social history. For a further glimpse into Sheffield's past, a visit to Bishops' House is a must.  Pioneering contemporary art can be found at Site Gallery, S1 Artspace, and Bloc Projects, and those with a keen eye will discover a thriving underground and street art scene - including pieces by Pete McKee and Phlegm.

Climb, cycle, walk, run – a city packed with activity

There are so many ways to get active and enjoy the vast green spaces in Sheffield. Hikers, runners, and cyclists flock to its surrounding hills, ancient woods, and winding valleys. If you fancy climbing, you couldn’t pick a better place than Sheffield - it’s known as the UK’s climbing capital. A third of the city is in the Peak District National Park, meaning its paths, hills, crags, reservoirs, and lidos are easily accessible by bus and train. Take a 15-minute train ride to the lovely Peak village of Grindleford, hike up Froggatt Edge, or ramble out to Baslow, then come back and drink tea at the famous Grindleford station cafe. For the fluffiest, friendliest field in Sheffield, head to the alpaca farm. With a visitor center and cafe, Mayfield Alpacas is on the Sheffield Round Walk route, right where Sheffield meets the Peak District. Just like in the daytime, Sheffield is a lively, creative, eclectic city after dark. There are classic pubs and boutique bars, every type of live music, and some of the best club nights anywhere in the UK. With nearly 70 venues in Sheffield, you’ll be able to find gigs by local and international acts nearly every day of the week. Venues include the legendary likes of the Leadmill and Sheffield Arena. SHOPPING

Sheffield is a major city, so you’ll find most of the big national brands represented. You’ll also find quirky, independent originals as well as high-end designer stores. For high-street shopping, the city center is host to well-known retail names. Meadowhall, one of the largest shopping centers in Britain, has pretty much any big retailer you can think of under its roof and is only a few minutes away from town by bus, tram, or train. If you end up living in the Broomhill or Crookes area, as many of our students do, there are some great places to be discovered. For second-hand bargains, you’ll find lots of charity shops in both areas. Broomhill is also home to Sheffield’s largest record shop, Record Collector, for all your vinyl needs.
