The University of Sheffield developed from three local institutions: the Sheffield School of Medicine, Firth College, and the Sheffield Technical School. The School of Medicine, founded in 1828, was by far the oldest. Its early history was very insecure and it was saved from collapse by the opening of Firth College, which took over the teaching of all basic science subjects to medical students.

Firth College was one of a group of university colleges founded in the late 19th century. It developed out of the Cambridge University Extension Movement, a scheme designed to bring university teaching to the large towns and cities of England, most of which lacked any university provision. The success of these courses in Sheffield led Mark Firth, a local steel manufacturer, to establish the College in 1879 as a center for teaching Arts and Science subjects.

RANKINGS:-

The university ranked 105th in the world and 13th in the UK in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024. also among the top 50 most international universities in the world, according to data from the 2023 Times Higher Education World University Rankings. The University is ranked 46th in the world and 15th in the UK. The data for this table is drawn largely from the 'international outlook' pillar of the THE World University Rankings 2022. This takes into account a university’s proportions of international students, international staff, and international reputation and journal publications with at least one international co-author. We're ranked 18th in the UK and 3rd in the north and northeast in the 2024 Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide. The University is ranked 104th in the world, 28th in Europe, 18th in Northern Europe, and 15th in the UK in the 2024 QS World University Rankings. The University is ranked 24th in the world (out of 1,403 institutions), 12th in Europe (out of 493) and 7th in the UK (out of 93) in the 2024 QS Sustainability Rankings. We're ranked 20th in the UK in the 2024 Complete University Guide. The 2023 THE Impact Rankings place Sheffield 42nd in the world, from over 1700 institutions, and 8th in the UK for its progress towards the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). 

CAMPUS FACILITIES:-

The University Library’s collections and content are rich in new media, digital works, texts, and research materials. You can access your library account and all our digital collections from anywhere on or off campus. Our online service has almost a million eBooks and over 60,000 journal titles along with a virtual library team and specialist librarians ready to support you.

The Diamond:-

The Diamond boasts innovative study facilities. It offers an on-demand print collection, high-demand textbooks, and access to our digital collections. It also features sector-leading creative media facilities including private editing booths and a full TV studio.

The Information Commons:-

The Information Commons has 1,300 learning spaces, extensive technology support, a high-demand collection of 120,000 volumes, and support for the development of your research and critical thinking skills.

Western Bank Library:-

Western Bank Library offers learning spaces designed to inspire your best work and houses extensive research collections. The Grade II listed building is also home to our Special Collections and National Fairground and Circus Archive.

Flexible services:-

Order a book online and when you're finished with it, you can drop it off at any of the five sites and we'll get it back to where it belongs. We'll automatically renew any unreturned books, provided no one else has requested them.

Food and drink:-

Certain corners of Sheffield are defined by the food and drink they offer. Whether you're into street food or pub grub, you’ll find something to satisfy your tastebuds. Take yourself to London Road for a culinary tour around the world. Sample Greek, Turkish, Chinese, Malaysian, Japanese, Mexican, and more all within a five-minute walk. Head to Kelham Island for a local beer. Or The Devonshire Quarter for independent coffee shops. If you get peckish on campus, there are over 20 cafes to choose from across the university offering tasty, convenient, and ethically sourced bites. If you’re craving a taste of home, or looking for looking for authentic international produce Sheffield’s numerous international supermarkets can help. 

SPORTS:-

Others just like a casual game of five-a-side once a week, or a social run. In a city packed with activity, you’ll find groups perfectly suited to your interests and fitness level. We've got all the facilities you need. Two full-sized synthetic turf pitches. A fully equipped gym and fitness center. A fiberglass molded bouldering wall. A 33m indoor heated pool. Students enjoy discounted memberships and flexible options to use our facilities. If you love the outdoors, the Peak District National Park is right on your doorstep. Climbers flock to Sheffield for the excellent array of indoor climbing walls. From the Monsal Trail to picturesque reservoir loops, the nearby Peak District has tons of glorious routes to charm cyclists and walkers. It’s also the perfect place to try something a bit different, including BMX, skateboarding, caving, and rowing. This city is full of active and supportive people, keen to find new devotees for the sport they love. Letting off steam, being social, and keeping active are all big boosters for our wellbeing - and with so much on offer, you’ll find it easy to discover the sport that works for you.

Immerse yourself in culture

Sheffield is full of creative energy. Art, theatre, and history gems can be found on pretty much every street corner. Museums Sheffield offers three great venues in the city centre, which celebrate home-grown talent and bring outstanding international experiences to Sheffield. There's the spectacular Millennium Gallery for art, crafts, and history. The Graves Gallery's breathtaking collection of visual art spans centuries and continents.  And next to the University, there's Weston Park Museum, where you can explore natural history, art, and events from the city’s social history. For a further glimpse into Sheffield's past, a visit to Bishops' House is a must.  Pioneering contemporary art can be found at Site Gallery, S1 Artspace, and Bloc Projects, and those with a keen eye will discover a thriving underground and street art scene - including pieces by Pete McKee and Phlegm.

Climb, cycle, walk, run – a city packed with activity

There are so many ways to get active and enjoy the vast green spaces in Sheffield. Hikers, runners, and cyclists flock to its surrounding hills, ancient woods, and winding valleys. If you fancy climbing, you couldn’t pick a better place than Sheffield - it’s known as the UK’s climbing capital. A third of the city is in the Peak District National Park, meaning its paths, hills, crags, reservoirs, and lidos are easily accessible by bus and train. Take a 15-minute train ride to the lovely Peak village of Grindleford, hike up Froggatt Edge, or ramble out to Baslow, then come back and drink tea at the famous Grindleford station cafe. For the fluffiest, friendliest field in Sheffield, head to the alpaca farm. With a visitor center and cafe, Mayfield Alpacas is on the Sheffield Round Walk route, right where Sheffield meets the Peak District. Just like in the daytime, Sheffield is a lively, creative, eclectic city after dark. There are classic pubs and boutique bars, every type of live music, and some of the best club nights anywhere in the UK. With nearly 70 venues in Sheffield, you’ll be able to find gigs by local and international acts nearly every day of the week. Venues include the legendary likes of the Leadmill and Sheffield Arena. There’s music in former warehouses (Hope Works) on trains (Folk Train), in pubs and bars (The Washington and Bungalows and Bears, for starters), basement ballrooms (Picture House Social), old factories (Yellow Arch Studios) and more.

SHOPPING

Sheffield is a major city, so you’ll find most of the big national brands represented. You’ll also find quirky, independent originals as well as high-end designer stores. For high-street shopping, the city center is host to well-known retail names. Meadowhall, one of the largest shopping centers in Britain, has pretty much any big retailer you can think of under its roof and is only a few minutes away from town by bus, tram, or train. If you end up living in the Broomhill or Crookes area, as many of our students do, there are some great places to be discovered. For second-hand bargains, you’ll find lots of charity shops in both areas. Broomhill is also home to Sheffield’s largest record shop, Record Collector, for all your vinyl needs.
