Yale University is a private Ivy League research university in New Haven, Connecticut. Founded in 1701, Yale is the third-oldest institution of higher education in the United States and one of the nine colonial colleges chartered before the American Revolution. It is among the most prestigious universities in the United States. The university traces its roots to the 1640s when colonial clergymen led an effort to establish a local college in the tradition of European liberal education. In 1701 the Connecticut legislature adopted a charter “to erect a Collegiate School.” The school officially became Yale College in 1718, when it was renamed in honor of Welsh merchant Elihu Yale, who had donated the proceeds from the sale of nine bales of goods together with 417 books and a portrait of King George I. Yale is organized into fourteen constituent schools: the original undergraduate college, the Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and twelve professional schools. While the university is governed by the Yale Corporation, each school's faculty oversees its curriculum and degree programs. In addition to a central campus in downtown New Haven, the university owns athletic facilities in western New Haven, a campus in West Haven, and forests and nature preserves throughout New England. As of 2021, the university's endowment was valued at $42.3 billion, the second largest of any educational institution. The Yale University Library, serving all constituent schools, holds more than 15 million volumes and is the third-largest academic library in the United States. Student-athletes compete in intercollegiate sports as the Yale Bulldogs in the NCAA Division I Ivy League conference.

 CAMPUSES

Yale College students provide a glimpse into the history and architecture of the University. The tours start at the Yale Visitor Center at 149 Elm Street New Haven, CT 06511. Hear about Yale’s rich 300-year history and aspects of student life at several of Yale’s fourteen residential colleges. The tour also includes the Gothic Sterling Memorial Library, Yale’s largest, and the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. Constructed with more than one hundred panels of translucent marble, the Beinecke is home to one of the world’s preeminent collections of rare materials, including the Gutenberg Bible. Tours depart from the Visitor Center (149 Elm Street), cover the central campus area, and last approximately 1 hour. The Yale Visitor Center wants to make certain that individuals with special needs will be able to access all of the programs and tours scheduled through the center. If you or a member of your group believe that they will require a specific accommodation, please notify the visitor center as soon as possible.

Leadership & Organization

Yale is overseen by President Peter Salovey and the university’s board of trustees, who comprise the governing and policy-making body known formally as the Yale Corporation. The institution is also led and supported by the University Cabinet, an advisory body convened by the president, which consists of the deans, vice presidents, and other senior academic and administrative leaders.

Other Advisory Bodies:

In addition to the Yale Corporation, the university has several advisory boards whose members are alumni and friends of Yale. These boards provide advice and counsel to the president on a number of topics. Some of the boards have a specific focus, such as the President’s Council on International Activities, which advises the president on Yale’s international initiatives. Others have a broad mandate, such as the University Council, which studies and makes recommendations to the president on a range of topics concerning university life.

Student Life

Modern resources meet proud tradition at Yale’s world-class extracurricular facilities. Student theater, music, and dance productions find life in over twenty on-campus venues. Bursting with culinary talent, our collection of award-winning chefs monopolizes the New England foodie scene. Take our very own Louis’ Lunch, a fourth-generation family-owned grub spot, whose ‘hamburger sandwiches’ have been pleasing crowds since 1895. Consider Claire Criscuolo of local favorite, Claire’s Corner Copia, who has been serving up kosher and vegetarian food with a flair since 1975, or the innovative Chef Emily Mingrone of Tavern on State, the award-winning restaurant located in downtown’s East Rock neighborhood. Come for the grub, but save room for a drink at the iconic cocktail club, Anchor Spa, led by seasoned entrepreneur and bar owner Karl Franz Williams. 

Shopping:

 

The history of New Haven lives and breathes beyond museum walls or historic haunts; it can be seen in the business owners of the city, who carry on the legacies and traditions of those who came before. Our highly walkable shopping scene offers an eclectic mix of mainstream sellers and local boutiques. A hub of food, art, history, and yes, fashion, Downtown New Haven’s distinctive shopping district begins on Chapel Street and crosses over to Broadway. Here, you will find The Shops at Yale offering a mix of national retailers, and locally-owned boutiques, including the bespoke original creations of Neville Wisdom to Apple, J. Crew,  L.L. Bean, and more. For artistic flair, the Whitney-Audubon Retail & Arts District and Ninth Square are ideal areas for antiques and home furnishings, and hipster-friendly and stylish vintage boutiques like Strange Ways.

Sports & Recreation:

As one of the nation’s most sporting destinations, New Haven welcomes world-class athletes every year with events like the New Haven Road Race, the New Haven Grand Prix, and the Closer to Free Ride. Yale Golf Course is one the top 100 golf courses in the U.S. and a handful of professional and collegiate sports teams including the Yale Bulldogs, New Haven offer boundless indoor and outdoor opportunities for fans and athletes alike.

From the football field to the hockey rink, Yale’s athletic teams boast a riveting tradition of excellence in year-round competition. Football season calls for Saturday afternoons at the Yale Bowl, where thousands of fans converge every year to cheer on the Bulldogs and vie for a coveted ‘selfie’ with his majesty, Handsome Dan XVIII. As any knowledgeable sports fan knows, there’s no rivalry more deep-seated than Yale’s beef with Harvard, and every year’s infamous Ivy League showdown (famously referred to as the “The Game”) is always more riveting than the last. Fun fact: Walter Camp, the Godfather of U.S. Football rules, was a Yale alum.

Transportation & Safety:

Yale and New Haven are built for walking and cycling. To travel beyond just a few blocks, students use campus shuttles, Zipcar rentals, and local parking options. Yale’s universal Live Safe App offers one-stop safety resources including door-to-door escorts. The Yale Police make 24-hour campus patrols and students have access to more than 500 Blue Phones.

Affordable. For Everyone:

Families whose total gross income is less than $75,000 (with typical assets) are not expected to make a contribution towards their child’s Yale education. Hundreds of Yale undergraduate families have an expected parental contribution of $0.

Programs and Departments

The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Yale offers an extraordinarily wide range of top-quality programs leading to the highest degree in academia: the Doctor of Philosophy. Enroute to your doctorate, you may be awarded a Master of Philosophy, Master of Arts, or Master of Science degree. Some programs award terminal master's degrees for those who choose not to pursue a doctoral degree.

Combined Degrees - In some cases, you may pursue a combined Ph.D. with departments in related fields. 

Joint Degrees - The Graduate School also maintains joint degree programs with Yale's schools of Law (J.D./Ph.D. and J.D./M.A.), Management (Ph.D./M.B.A.), Medicine (M.D./Ph.D.), and Nursing (M.S.N./Ph.D). 

Certificates – The Graduate School offers several certificates that can be pursued while obtaining your Ph.D. There are two distinct types of certificates: academic program certificates and certificates in training.

Certificate Programs:

Central to the mission of Yale College is ensuring a broad education rooted in the liberal arts and sciences. That education should provide both breadth and depth across a wide array of disciplines, and it should be responsive to the shifting landscape of those disciplines and their interrelationships. To encourage students to engage within and across departmental and disciplinary boundaries, Yale College offers both discipline-based and skills-based certificates. A certificate is not a smaller version of a major; instead, it offers opportunities for students to deepen a skill or to bring disparate elements into focus. There are three types of certificates offered at Yale College: Advanced Language Certificates, Skills-Based Certificates, and Interdisciplinary Certificates.

 Yale is home to a number of renowned research centers, laboratories, and institutes that are pushing the boundaries of knowledge on topics ranging from autism to globalization. Yale scholars are advancing the fields of humanities, arts, social sciences, medicine, science, and engineering.

International Experience:

Yale education goes global. Yale is committed to providing opportunities for study, research, or work abroad as part of the Yale College experience. Former Yale President Richard Levin said it best back in 2003.

The Yale Office of Career Strategy coordinates dozens of rewarding work experiences for undergraduates in cities around the world. Students connect with a long list of Preferred Yale Partners -organizations with special connections to Yale interested in offering opportunities to Yale students - to find internships in arts, politics, health, technology, community advocacy, research, finance, journalism, law, 71% of the most recent graduating class participated in study, research, and/or internships abroad and more $6,932,103 Fellowship and International Summer Award (ISA) funding for international study, research, and internship experiences undertaken by Yale College students in 2017–2018.
